Three of us. All ex VIP cabin crew.

We know the galley, the diet card and the 5 a.m. re-plate — because we lived them. So we built the caterer we always wished we could call.

The local tableCooked so it travels

What Bulawayo brings to your in-flight catering (BUQ)

Bulawayo is cattle and maize country, and the table in Matabeleland follows it. A private jet menu for Bulawayo starts with beef, since the ranching around the city gives local beef its name across Zimbabwe, and with sadza, the stiff maize porridge behind most meals here. On an inflight menu, sadza holds better portioned and re-plated than reheated whole, so the relish travels apart.

Local specialities worth putting in a private jet food order from FVJN: braaied beef, boerewors, slow-cooked beef or goat stew, covo greens in groundnut sauce, and biltong with roasted peanuts for the cabin. Mangoes in the hot months and citrus later can lift plain private jet platters.

The honest limit on a Bulawayo menu is the galley, not the produce. Most aircraft here have one oven and a small chiller, so we choose dishes that finish in one pass and keep sauces in their own pots. Tell us the type and the seat plan and we will say which Zimbabwean dishes suit the trip and which belong on the ground.

Business aviationOur core

VIP flight and private jet catering at Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport (FVJN)

A corporate jet catering order into Bulawayo is usually a small, precise brief: four to eight passengers, a charter flight catering slot that is already fixed, and a galley with one oven. Business jet catering here leans on dishes that finish in a single pass. For VIP flight catering our private jet chef writes a bespoke menu around that oven, which is also how we handle luxury inflight catering, with sauces in their own pots and plating kept plain. Where a customer asks for inflight catering and in-flight catering for the full trip, the crew meals ride in separate boxes.

State & royalDiscretion, protocol

Head of state and government inflight catering at Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport (BUQ)

Official visits to Zimbabwe need quiet, traceable catering. For government flight catering and head of state flight catering, we agree the menu with the protocol office, and VIP aviation catering is sealed and logged. State visit aircraft catering is delivered at the aircraft, with the team named in advance.

Special meals

Allergen free special meals and aviation catering at Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport (FVJN)

At Bulawayo, special meals are a procedure built around the local kitchen: groundnut sauces, peanut-based relishes and dairy in stews are where allergens hide here, so we separate them at the source. Kosher, halal, vegan, gluten free and allergen free requests are packed in their own sealed boxes, and kids meals go in a separate tray labelled by seat.

Crew & pilot mealsOn request

Crew meals and cockpit meals in Bulawayo (FVJN)

Crew meals at Bulawayo are ordered with the flight and invoiced on request, like everything else. Flight crew meals can be hot or cold; pilot meals and cockpit meals are packed apart from guest trays, with different meals for pilots when the operator asks for it. Crew catering is boxed in crew meal boxes, labelled CREW, so the cabin crew meals are never mixed with the guests'.

DeliveryEvery FBO

FBO catering and handling agent delivery at Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport

Catering delivery to the aircraft at FVJN is agreed with the handling agent before anyone drives onto the ramp. FBO catering is handed over at the general aviation terminal side of the field: who clears the vehicle, where it stops, who carries the trays up the steps. Ground handling catering and handling agent catering are confirmed in writing for the slot, and the whole order is packed in loading order so the first thing out of the van is the last thing the galley needs. General aviation traffic at Bulawayo is light, so the FBO door is rarely crowded.

High loader and aircraft provisioning: aviation catering at Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport

Aircraft size decides the loading at Bulawayo, not the menu. A business jet takes its trays through the cabin door by hand, a large cabin or VIP airliner may need a high loader at the galley door, and a handling agent will tell you what is on the ramp. Galley catering for the larger types is packed in trolleys or sealed containers, with the oven plan written on each. We confirm airside catering delivery and aircraft provisioning with your handling agent beforehand.

About the airportFVJN / BUQ

About Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport (BUQ): airport catering for business aviation

Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International is the second airport of Zimbabwe and the one serving Matabeleland. Airport catering here is shaped by one runway, a modest terminal and steady charter traffic, with general aviation parked well away from the main apron. FBO services and ground handling services are arranged through your handling agent, and Bulawayo works as a quiet business aviation hub for the south-west of the country.

Business aviation

Business aviation at Bulawayo is mostly charters and visiting delegations, so inflight catering and in-flight catering orders tend to be small and specific. Aviation catering for the aircraft, business aviation catering for the delegation, executive jet catering for the principal and diplomatic flight catering for official trips all pass through the same handover, and cabin crew meals and crew meals are boxed apart. As a business aviation hub it is small, and general aviation movements seldom overlap, which keeps FBO services and ground handling services unhurried.

Customs & food import

Customs in Zimbabwe can inspect food on arrival and departure. A menu built from local beef, vegetables and fruit avoids most of the paperwork, and we tell you in advance if an imported item needs clearance. Your handling agent and the FBO services desk know the current practice for general aviation, and ground handling services can confirm what the officers will look at on the day.

“Several practical details needed attention at FVJN, with chicken skewers with a couscous salad requested for 3 guests and a small galley worktop to accommodate. The Galley Girls prepared the sandwiches for assembly in the galley, with the accompanying elements easy to locate. I appreciated the emphasis on meal organisation throughout the VIP flight catering arrangements. The canapés stayed together in one group, so another crew member could follow the same plating sequence.”

“Small packing details became important at BUQ: our 11 passengers wanted vegetarian wraps and colourful salads, and we had different crew meal preferences. With charter flight catering, careful attention to galley preparation matters as much to our crew as the menu itself. The Galley Girls used a readable packing list for the salads, which helped when two colleagues checked the order together. We could distinguish the main courses at a glance instead of lifting lids just to establish what belonged to each service.”

“My order at Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport covered mini sandwiches and individual desserts for 3 guests, with a practical service plan needed because of a short ground stop. The order made private jet food feel manageable because the catering handover had been considered beforehand. With several people involved, The Galley Girls kept the canapés and delivery arrangements together in a concise order update. The sauces went straight to the right colleague instead of circulating between several people during the turnaround.”

Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International: the questionsAsked by crews
How much does private jet catering cost at Bulawayo?+

A short list of what costs more at Bulawayo: imported fish, specialist cheeses and anything needing customs paperwork. What costs less: local beef, boerewors, sadza, groundnut dishes and seasonal fruit. We write the quote for your actual menu.

What is the lead time for catering at FVJN?+

Lead time here is shaped by access: the handling agent arranges the pass, the escort and the stand. Send us the agent's details with the order and we align the handover. Late orders are treated as normal work, not as exceptions.

What about customs for catering at Bulawayo?+

Customs applies to anything brought in from abroad, and a special-meal request is where it shows up first. A kosher or halal meal sourced overseas may need paperwork, so for Bulawayo we usually cook these locally and seal them in a labelled box. Tell us the restriction and the seat number.

Can you bring food on board at Bulawayo?+

Passengers' own food is usually fine, but it must fit the galley. A small jet cannot take big trays, and the oven is the limit. We can pack a smaller format that suits the aircraft.

Is catering part of a charter into Bulawayo?+

No: private jet charter and catering are separate orders. Empty repositioning flights are a good example: no guests, but the crew still eat, and that is a small order of its own.
